General Questions About Red Light Therapy
How effective is red light therapy?

Red and near-infrared light therapy is supported by over 8,000 (and growing) peer-reviewed studies across more than 70 countries. Clinical trials consistently show promising benefits for skin health, pain relief, cognitive function, recovery, and more.

That said, every body is different. Results can vary—but with Luxxe, you’ll never be left guessing why.

We can’t promise you’ll feel every possible benefit light therapy has to offer. But we can promise this:
We’ve done everything possible to eliminate the guesswork. To deliver the right dose.
And to make it simple, effective, and effortless—from the moment you begin.

What time of the day is best for red light therapy?

There's no strict rule about the best time for red light therapy; consistency is key. Our devices have built-in preset treatment protocols for various applications from exercise recovery to anti-aging skin routines. Some people prefer morning sessions for an energy boost, while others opt for sessions 5-6 hours before bedtime for more restful sleep

How far does the light penetrate into the body?

Red (600–700nm) and near-infrared (700–1000nm) light don’t travel in straight lines through the body. Instead, when light from non-contact LED arrays hits the skin, it scatters—bouncing and diffusing through tissues in many directions due to interactions with structures like collagen and cells.

This scattering allows light to influence tissues at various depths, from a few millimeters to several centimeters, depending on the wavelength. While the intensity decreases with depth, scattered photons can still activate cellular mechanisms in deeper layers.

These effects aren’t just local—they can also be systemic. For example, when light stimulates cytochrome c oxidase in mitochondria, it boosts ATP (energy) production, which supports healing and function across the body.
Unlike lasers—which deliver a narrow, focused beam like a “sword”—LED therapy offers broader, more diffuse coverage that’s ideal for full-body use.

It’s also worth noting that many diagrams oversimplify how light moves through the body. In reality, biological tissues scatter light extensively—so penetration is more like a glow spreading inward, not a straight line drilling through.

How often should I use red light therapy?

Usage varies based on need. Daily for general wellness, or 3-4 times per week for chronic conditions, following our preset treatment guidelines.

How long should the treatment session be?

The ideal session length depends on what biological response you're targeting—because red and near-infrared light therapy is dose-dependent, and different mechanisms require different combinations of power (irradiance) and time.

For example:

Skin health benefits may be triggered with moderately irradiance over shorter durations.

Recovery or inflammation support may require moderate irradiance over a longer session.

Cardiovascular and cognitive benefits often respond best to lower irradiance over extended exposure times.

This power–time balance is crucial—because too little may not activate the desired effect, while too much could diminish or reverse benefits.

That’s why Luxxe’s IntelliDose™ technology automatically adjusts LED output to maintain the optimal power level based on your distance, while its built-in presets apply research-backed session durations tailored to specific goals.

And for experienced users, PRO Mode allows full manual control over power and session time to replicate clinical dosing protocols or customize your experience.

Why Luxxe Stands Out
Why do I need Luxxe's precise technology when other devices suggest using a ruler to estimate distance?

Using a ruler to estimate your distance from the device is a best-guess workaround—a static method to try and control how much power (irradiance) reaches your skin. But here’s the problem:

No Feedback – Most devices don’t show you the actual irradiance hitting your body.

No Control – Even small changes in your position dramatically alter the dose.

No Real Consistency – A ruler doesn’t account for body movement, angle, or beam variation.

Some users try to verify irradiance using solar power meters, but those tools don’t reflect how light behaves on the skin or deliver real-time treatment metrics.

Luxxe eliminates the guesswork with IntelliDose™—our patent-pending technology that:

Senses your position in real time

Adjusts LED output dynamically

Maintains your target irradiance even if you move

So instead of relying on static distance or external tools, you get a precise, research-based dose—automatically delivered and displayed right on screen.

You're not estimating the dose. You're getting it. Every time.

Why is automatic dosing important? Can’t I just stand a certain distance from the device?

Because red light therapy is dose-dependent, getting the right results means getting the right irradiance and session time—consistently.

But standing “6–20 inches away” assumes all panels deliver the same power at that distance. They don’t. In fact, two people standing the same distance from two different devices could receive dramatically different doses.

It’s a shot in the dark—especially when devices don’t show you what power (irradiance) you’re actually getting.

We understand that struggle completely. That’s why Luxxe uses IntelliDose™, our patent-pending technology that:

Detects your exact distance in real time

Automatically adjusts the LED output

Delivers and maintains your target irradiance, even if you move

Your real-time dose is clearly displayed on screen—so you always know what your body is receiving. No rulers. No calculations. No guessing.

Just consistent, research-backed therapy—automated.

Does red light therapy really require precise protocols, or can I still get benefits with basic setups?

Basic red light setups can offer some benefits—under the right conditions. But getting consistent, repeatable results usually requires manual trial and error, and most people don’t know whether they’re hitting the right dose for their goals.

Luxxe delivers a smarter, more effective path.

We replicate dosing protocols from published clinical studies using full-body, non-contact LED setups—not vague approximations. Our built-in protocols cover outcomes like:

Cardiovascular support (e.g. 10–13 mW/cm² for 30 minutes)
Cognitive enhancement
Skin rejuvenation (e.g. 23 mW/cm² for 12 minutes)
Recovery, pain, and more

And Luxxe delivers it all automatically, with real-time dose feedback—no rulers, no spreadsheets, no second guessing.

If you're aiming for maximum benefit with minimal uncertainty, Luxxe is the only system built to match what the research actually shows to be effective.

How does Luxxe ensure transparency and trust in its therapy sessions?

Every Luxxe session shows you exactly what matters: target irradiance, session time, and your real-time dose—on-screen, as it happens.

These values aren’t guesses. They’re aligned with dosing used in peer-reviewed, full-body clinical trials—not vague suggestions or forum advice.

While small variations (+/- 5–8%) can occur depending on your position, Luxxe gives you transparency no traditional device can offer—so you always know what you’re getting, and why it’s working.

Luxxe Product-Specific Questions
Are there preset treatment modes?

Yes. Luxxe offers three intelligent modes—each designed to deliver clarity, consistency, and clinically guided results:

Whether you’re new to red light therapy or an experienced practitioner, Luxxe puts science-backed dosing at your fingertips.

How do I dose red light therapy?

With Luxxe, dosing isn’t a mystery—it’s displayed clearly on-screen in real time.

In the early days of Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), dosing focused on Joules per square centimeter (J/cm²) because treatments targeted small, precise areas. But as the industry evolved toward full-body LED panels, emphasis shifted toward total energy delivered (Joules) due to the broader treatment area.

Luxxe gives you both:

J/cm² shows the light intensity reaching your skin—critical for understanding treatment strength at any distance.

Total Joules (J) reflects the cumulative energy delivered across your entire body, which matters most for full-body systems.

Our auto-dosing technology automatically adjusts for your distance and locks in the session durations used in clinical trials to ensure you receive the intended dose—no measuring, no math. Everything is tracked and displayed clearly, so you can follow research-backed protocols or tailor sessions confidently.

How far should I stand from the device?

With Luxxe’s auto-dosing technology, you don’t need to worry about how far you’re standing.

Our built-in sensors detect your exact position and automatically adjust the LED output to maintain the target irradiance used in clinical studies—like 28 mW/cm² for our recovery protocol. Whether you’re 6 inches or 36 inches away, Luxxe does the math and delivers the correct power to your body—no measuring, no math, no second-guessing.

We know this may feel counterintuitive at first. The entire red light therapy industry has conditioned users to obsess over distance—because with traditional manual panels, distance was the only way to influence dose. Luxxe changes that.

This is a new category of smart panel—one that thinks, adapts, and doses for you.

Some early users say their first Luxxe session was the most relaxing red light therapy they’ve ever had—not just because of the light, but because their mind could finally rest, knowing the device was doing all the work, precisely and intelligently.

How much power is actually emitted by your devices?

Luxxe devices are tested using professional-grade spectrometers to ensure accurate, reliable power output. In PRO Mode, users can access up to 75 mW/cm² at 6 inches with all wavelengths set to 100%—ideal for creating custom protocols or replicating specific research studies.

But here’s where Luxxe stands apart:

Our preset protocols follow published clinical trials using full-body, non-contact LED setups. These protocols use irradiance levels between 13 to 35 mW/cm²—a range carefully chosen to activate specific biological mechanisms without overloading tissues.

While these values may appear “low” compared to brands promoting ultra-high power, the truth is this:

More power isn’t always better. The right power over the right time is what produces results.

Many of today’s oversized light therapy panels—including Luxxe’s own—cover large surface areas. Even at moderate irradiance levels, they deliver a high total dose of energy. For example, our compact Aura model (18" x 12") can deliver thousands of Joules per session, thanks to consistent coverage and optimized duration.

Time is the dose. The light is the medicine.

That’s why Luxxe protocols are built on the science of dose rate—balancing naturally inspired irradiance with the optimal session length so your body can absorb the therapeutic benefits safely, effectively, and biologically.

Our IntelliDose™ technology ensures your body receives the right irradiance at your actual position, every time. And you’ll see that in real time—no guessing, no math, no worry.

We’re proud to follow the science, not marketing hype. Luxxe delivers clinically accurate doses—so you get real results, not just big numbers.

Should I be worried about Electromagnetic Frequencies (EMFs)?

Luxxe devices are designed with your safety in mind. We engineer every unit to emit no detectable non-native EMFs (nnEMFs) within 4 inches of the front panel—ensuring your sessions are both effective and safe.

While many light therapy devices operate with little regard for nnEMF exposure, we’ve taken extra care to reduce unnecessary biological stressors—especially during wellness treatments meant to support healing and restoration.

For those interested in learning more, we recommend The Fourth Phase of Water by Dr. Gerald Pollack, which explores how nnEMFs may influence cellular processes and structured water in the body.

With Luxxe, you get powerful light therapy—without unwanted electrical noise.

How do I know which Luxxe device to choose?

It depends on the area you want to treat—and how much coverage you’re aiming for.
The Luxxe Aura and Flex-Mini are perfect for targeted use on the face, neck, or isolated areas, and are great entry points into light therapy. And because red and near-infrared light can have systemic benefits, treating one area may positively influence your whole body.

That said, larger devices don’t just cover more surface area—they deliver more total photonic energy (measured in Joules), simply because they treat a larger portion of the body at once. This doesn’t change the fluence (Joules per cm², or dose), which remains consistent across all Luxxe models. But it does impact how efficiently you can treat the full body.

If you're looking for comprehensive, full-body coverage with maximum total energy output, our Luxxe Flex, Elite, and Elite-Pro models are ideal.

In short:
Same dose across all devices.
More surface area = more total energy = more efficient whole-body therapy.

Choose the panel that best matches your goals—and how much of your body you want to treat in a single session.

Can I use it while clothed?

For full benefits, it’s best to use the device with direct exposure to clean, dry skin - naked.
Red light struggles to penetrate clothing, especially dark-colored fabrics, while near-infrared light can penetrate most fabrics.

Is red light therapy beneficial or harmful to the eyes?

Studies suggest red light therapy can benefit eye health, but always consult your ophthalmologist or doctor first. Avoid looking directly into intense light sources, and use the included goggles for extra safety.

Why doesn’t Luxxe include 850nm like other red light panels?

Great question—and one we’re happy to answer.

Most red light therapy devices on the market include 660nm and 850nm because these wavelengths became widely available and cost-effective early in the photobiomodulation (PBM) era. However, the selection was driven more by commercial accessibility than clinical superiority.

At Luxxe, we chose a research-first approach.

Our five-wavelength blend—630, 660, 810, 830, and 980nm—is designed to align more closely with the most frequently used wavelengths in full-body, non-contact clinical research. In fact, while 850nm is common in consumer devices, it appears less frequently in clinical trials compared to 630, 810, and 830nm.

Renowned photomedicine expert Dr. Michael Hamblin has noted that:

All wavelengths in the 800s (810, 830, 850nm) produce similar therapeutic effects

Wavelengths between 620–670nm, including 630nm and 660nm, also deliver comparable outcomes

So, by including 810 and 830nm, Luxxe fully captures the benefits typically associated with 850nm—while offering additional coverage that better matches published research.

And then there’s 980nm.

Dr. Hamblin has called 980nm a very “interesting” wavelength due to its alignment with the water absorption curve. It’s been shown to support biological effects that may go beyond traditional mitochondrial stimulation. At Luxxe, we believe 980nm plays a unique role in structuring the metabolic water produced by mitochondria during ATP production—an effect that may enhance hydration, circulation, and detoxification at the cellular level. In short:
Luxxe isn’t missing anything. We’ve designed our system to go beyond the conventional pairings—targeting a broader and more research-relevant spectrum to maximize biological impact and consistency.
